PRINT AND PLAY / 04 / SHAPE & SPACE
Build a picture from shapes
Turn circles, squares and triangles into a place, a vehicle or something completely new.
Give it a try.
- Name or notice the shapes together. Turn the paper and see whether the same shape looks different.
- Invite the child to choose what to make: a house, a creature, a vehicle or an invented design.
- Add shapes by drawing, pointing or arranging large paper pieces. Talk about above, beside, inside and underneath as it fits the play.
- Let the child decide when to stop. Ask them to tell you about one part of the picture rather than guessing what it must be.
A QUESTION TO EXPLORE“What could this shape become if we turn it?”
A SMALLER START
Keep it simple.
Use two shapes and let an adult draw where the child points.
IF THEY WANT MORE
Take it further.
Make a second version with the same shapes. Compare what changed without choosing a winner.
MAKE ROOM FOR EVERYONE
Find their way in.
Offer larger shapes, thicker drawing tools or an adult as the drawing partner. A story about the shapes counts too.
Something to remember.
Our shapes became… We used the words… Next time we might…
